Husted & Zingeler were approached early this year to create a series of custom vases for the new Hawthorn Dining Room & Bar at the Fairmont Palliser hotel in downtown Calgary. The overall vibe of the new space was described as modern vintage and was designed by Frank Architecture, with artistic consulting by Art and Objects from Toronto. We were so thrilled to be working with such talented people and we started sketching ideas right away.

We developed a few new clay/underglaze combinations by working off the colour pallet of the space. It is neutral and bright but grounded with deep green velvets, cognac leather, and smokey blush. We had plenty to be inspired by. After a month of creating samples we ultimately settled on a series of five vases in various combinations of greys, greens, sand, and blush. Kate created an iconic shape and threw multiple sizes that could be arranged in many different ways. A large portion of the surface was left for my carving and I chose to do iterations of the ‘North’ pattern. The vases are impactful enough to stand on their own while also feeling like a family when grouped together. They are a small part of a huge remodel and yet they are a beautiful detail that subtly enhances the experience of dining at the Hawthorn.
